    Join us for a mock trial program in Chicago on October 23, 2015 that offers you a greater understanding of the complexities surrounding a construction trial involving a design-build project where the plaintiff is claiming breach of contract, negligent and defective design, while the defense claims that the fault lies with the work performed by the plaintiff’s other contractors. Construction law attorneys and real estate practitioners with all levels of practice experience who attend this full-day seminar will learn how to construct a strong opening statement, examine witnesses, and present a strong closing argument.

    Thorne appointed U.S. Bankruptcy Judge

    Chief Judge Diane P. Wood of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit is pleased to announce the appointment of Deborah L. Thorne to a 14-year term as United States Bankruptcy Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. She will take office on October 22, 2015.

    Ms. Thorne earned her bachelor's degree from Macalester College, her Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Duke University and her law degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago Kent College of Law. She was admitted to practice in Illinois in 1983.

    Ms. Thorne is a partner in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP. She is Vice President of the American Bankruptcy Institute for Communications and Information Technology and serves on the Executive Committee. Ms.Thorne is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and is also a member of the Federal Bar Association, Turnaround Management Association, International Women's Insolvency Confederation, and Decalogue Society.

    Environmental Law Section to host Professional Development Luncheon

    Please join the ISBA Environmental Law Section Council for a Professional Development Luncheon to discuss the Clean Power Plan - the first-ever national standards addressing carbon pollution from power plants. This program will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from noon-1 p.m. at the ISBA Chicago Office, 20 S. Clark.

    Edwin (Ted) Henning Conger 1932-2015

    Edwin (Ted) Henning Conger was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan to parents Julia Lathrop Henning and Ralph Gilbert Conger, the youngest of four brothers. He grew up there, developing a life-long love of reading and a flair for Ping-Pong. At Ann Arbor, he earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science and an MBA from the University of Michigan in 1955 and, further east, received his L.L.B/J.D., cum laude from the Harvard Law School.

    Back in the Midwest, he joined the Chicago firm of Tenney and Bentley in 1957. Later, a partner, he continued to practice law there, his "first job out school", for the rest of his life. Not much of one for job swapping, nor the retirement scene by the golf course, he believed in keeping active and engaged. A good example set.

    He met Elizabeth Silvers in Chicago and continued his courtship when she moved with her family to Portugal. Annual summer trips successful, they were married in Gibraltar on July 27, 1960.

    A longtime resident of Hyde Park, he was a member of The Savoyards, the local Gilbert & Sullivan company, providing choral as well as business acumen. He served as a board member of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, and of the University of Chicago Hospitals.

    Mary "Molly" Margaret Lien 1948-2015

    Molly Warner Lien, age 67, died on September 11, 2015, at the Meijer Heart Center in Grand Rapids as a result of cardiomyopathy and complications of heart surgery. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 26, 1948, the only child of the late Cornelius and Donna (Dora M.) Beukema. She grew up in Homewood, Illinois, and she attended the Interlochen Arts Camp, and finished her last two years of high school at the Interlochen Arts Academy, graduating in 1966 with a major in voice. She won the concerto competition twice at the Arts Camp and again during her senior year at the Arts Academy. She also played the leads in several productions, including those by Gilbert & Sullivan, and the high school musical. 

    After attending the University of Michigan her freshman year, she graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in music. She sang numerous operatic roles, but ultimately was drawn to a career in law. She graduated with honors from the Emory University School of Law in Atlanta in 1978 where she was President of the Women’s Law Student Association, Articles Editor of the Law Review, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honorary Society, and a member of the Order of the Coif. She was also voted the Wall Street Journal Award by the Faculty for Outstanding Academic Achievement in the field of law.

    Sims joins Ice Miller’s 2015 Fall Associate Class; will be based in Chicago

    Ice Miller LLP is pleased to announce the arrival of attorney Riele Sims, who will be based in Ice Miller’s Chicago office. Every member of the 2015 fall class has professional experience as a law clerk, summer associate, legal intern or in a previous non-legal career. Riele is a member of the 10-attorney 2015 Fall Class.

    Riele Sims is an associate in Ice Miller's Litigation Group.  She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Vanderbilt University, with minors in Political Science and Corporate Strategy. While there, she was an executive board member of the Alpha Kappa Delta honor society, Tennessee Iota chapter. Riele is admitted to practice law in the State of Indiana.

    Richard D. Cudahy 1926-2015

    A memorial session honoring the memory of the late Honorable Richard D.Cudahy, Senior Circuit Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, will be held on Monday, November 30, in the Ceremonial Courtroom on the 25th Floor of the Dirksen Federal Courthouse at 219 South Dearborn Street in Chicago.

    Judge Cudahy was appointed to the court in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter and continued to serve until his death on September 22, 2015. He is survived by his widow Janet, seven adult children, and thirteen grandchildren. Served by 83 law clerks and two secretaries during his 36 years on the bench, he set a high standard for all to follow and is greatly missed.

    Justice Burke announces vacancy in 13th subcircuit

    Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke announced today an application process for a vacancy in the 13th Judicial Subcircuit of Cook County.

    The vacancy will be created by the retirement of Cook County Circuit Judge Thomas P. Fecarotta Jr., who served as a judge since 1998. His retirement took effect September 30, 2015.
