    Young Lawyers to host golf outing on Aug. 3
    The Illinois State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will host a golf outing on Wednesday, Aug. 3 at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont. This event will benefit the IBF/YLD Children’s Assistance Fund. The $150 ticket includes golf, cart, concession stand ticket, cocktails, dinner and CLE program. Tickets to attend just the evening dinner are $50 each. Many sponsorship opportunities are available, contact Janet Sosin at jsosin@isba.org for more information. Golf Outing Schedule:
    • 11:00 a.m. - Noon: Ethics CLE Program presented by Mary Andreoni, ARDC. Approval pending for one hour PMCLE credit. Cost of program is included in the golfer fee.

    Willam A. Barnett 1916-2011
    Longtime Chicago defense attorney William A. Barnett has passed away after a battle with prostate cancer. He was 94. Barnett was a lifelong resident of Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood. He received his undergraduate and J.D. degrees from Loyola University Chicago. He enlisted in the in the military shortly after passing the bar in 1941. He served in the counterintelligence corps. Barnett first came to prominence in 1958 as the lead assistant U.S. attorney who prosecuted Chicago mobster Paul "The Waiter" Ricca for tax evasion. He moved on to defense work and won an acquittal for former Gov. William G. Stratton on tax evasion charges. He also played a lead role in the defense of former Illinois Attorney General William Scott in 1980. "You couldn't ask for anything better in a lawyer than Bill Barnett," said Thomas P. Sullivan, the former U.S. attorney and current partner at Jenner & Block LLP. "He was a splendid lawyer and more importantly he was a splendid human being -- honorable, reliable, direct, forthright."

    ISBA Law and Leadership Institute in 2nd week

Maloney."][/caption] The Illinois State Bar Association's Law and Leadership Institute has rolled into its second week -- and the students are loving it. They enjoyed visits to the Daley Center and 1st District Appellate Court on Friday. The students got to witness a trial in Traffic Court at the Daley Center spent nearly three hours discussing a variety of topics with Justice Bertina Lampkin at the Appellate Court. Justice Lampkin even walked the students through her famous dissent in the Rahm Emanuel ballot case. On Tuesday, the students were treated to a negotiations class with Northwestern Law School Professor Sheila Maloney. Click here to view pictures from the court visits.     Cook County Law Library to close at 6 p.m. each day for sprinkler installation
    The Cook County Law Library will be closing at 6 p.m. on weekdays starting July 6 and continuing through Sept. 23. Pursuant to Chicago Municipal Code 13-196-205, the Public Building Commission is installing an automatic sprinkler system in the Daley Center.

    Bruozas joins Childress Duffy as partner

    Kirschner named partner at Corboy & Demetrio

Kirschner has become a partner of the personal injury law firm of Corboy & Demetrio, the firm announced Wednesday.   Kirschner, 39, was an associate at the Chicago law firm since 1998, devoting his legal career to representing plaintiffs in serious personal injury and wrongful death cases. “Dan’s skills as a trial lawyer and advocate for our clients exemplify the firm’s mission to provide the highest skilled legal services to the most in need,” said Thomas A. Demetrio, founding partner of Corboy & Demetrio. “Regarded by clients, judges and opposing counsel for his consummate professionalism, Dan practices with the utmost respect for the legal process and the pursuit of full justice,” Demetrio added. Kirschner has been recognized by the Illinois Supreme Court with a recurrent appointment to the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee, as well as a past appointment as a Commissioner on the Character and Fitness Committee of the Illinois board of Admissions to the Bar.  Dan has also been honored by Governor Pat Quinn with an appointment to the Illinois Carnival-Amusement Safety Board, a position he currently holds.     ISBA Law and Leadership Institute underway at John Marshall
    The ISBA Illinois Law and Leadership Institute kicked off on Tuesday at John Marshall Law School. The Institute is a pilot program for 25 students entering the 9th and 10th grades. The students will make a courthouse visit and meet with Cook County judges on Friday at the Daley Center. The Law and Leadership Institute is a state-wide initiative undertaken in collaboration with the legal community and designed to assist minority youth in achieving academic success beyond high school and encouraging them to aspire to a career in the law. This program is being administered by the ISBA’s Standing Committee on Diversity Pipeline with the assistance of Illinois lawyers who share a similar commitment. The ISBA will be closely monitoring this pilot program with a goal of expanding it to other locations in the state. Find out more about the program at www.isba.org/lawandleadershipprogram
