    Sarah E. Fanto joins Quarles & Brady's Intellectual Property Group

    The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP announced that Sarah E. Fanto has joined the Firm's Chicago office as an associate in the Intellectual Property Group.

    Ms. Fanto has experience in preparing and prosecuting utility and design patent applications in the U.S. and abroad, advising clients in matters related to patentability, patent validity, and patent infringement, and drafting non-disclosure agreements, joint development agreements, and licensing agreements. Ms. Fanto also has experience prosecuting and enforcing Trademarks. During law school, Ms. Fanto served as a law clerk at the Chicago Legal Clinic where she prepared FOIA requests, researched the Clean Air Act and applicable Illinois statutes, and wrote opinion letters and memos to clients.

    She earned her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law and her undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

    ISBA, ALA to co-host Candidates Forum on Feb. 24

    The Illinois State Bar Association and the Appellate Lawyers Association will co-host a Candidates Forum on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 at the ISBA's Chicago Regional Office, 20 S. Clark, Ste. 900. This event will run from noon-1:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

    Each appellate candidate will be permitted time to speak about his or her qualifications and reasons for seeking the position, followed by questions from the audience.

    Jack W. Rosen 1930-2012

    Eighty-one year old Jack W. Rosen of Highland Park, Illinois died peacefully in the loving arms of his loving family Saturday, January 7, 2012.

    He is survived by his wife of 39 years Beverly Rosen and children and grandchildren and a sister and brother.

    He was born May 15th 1930 in New York City, moving to Chicago at the age of three with his parents Sam and Ella Rosen, both immigrants from Europe. He grew up in the Humboldt Park neighborhood and spent much of his free time playing basketball and pool at the Deborah Boys' Club on Division Street. When not playing at the boys club, he played stick ball in nearby parks. His parents founded Sam's Wine on North Avenue.

    He was a product of Chicago public schools attending Lafayette Elementary School, P.S. 299 in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood and graduated from Tuley High School. He graduated from University of Illinois with a B.S. in management and marketing in 1952. He earned his Law Degree (J.D.) from DePaul University in 1955 and was admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States of America in 1963. He enjoyed lifelong friendships with many of his DePaul classmates, many of them attorneys who helped build Chicago's legal system. He served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer for two years before heading back to Chicago to start his career.

    Professionally, Jack practiced law for 56 years, most of it as a sole practitioner on La Salle Street. He took great pride in defending those less fortunate and those who felt they did not have a voice in the system. Generations of family members engaged his services. He spent hours fighting for the rights of his clients, often against large businesses. He considered himself a small town lawyer in the big city.

    Erik M. Jarmusz joins as an associate in the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group. He has significant real estate experience that includes commercial real estate, corporate transactions and office leasing.Jarmusz also has extensive experience negotiating leases on behalf of both landlords and tenants, and has also focused on general real estate transactions including acquisitions, dispositions, leasing, 1031 exchanges and deeds-in-lieu of foreclosure. He received his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Loyola University Chicago and his law degree, cum laude, from DePaul University College of Law. Previously, Jarmusz was an associate at Gardiner Koch Weisberg & Wrona.

    ISBA presents Illinois State Library with 100th Anniversary Issue of Illinois Bar Journal

    Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) President John G. Locallo (right) presented an oversize copy of the cover of the 100th anniversary edition of the Illinois Bar Journal, the monthly magazine of the ISBA, to Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, in his capacity as State Librarian, on Tuesday, Jan. 31. An actual copy of the magazine was donated to the library for its archives and will be made available to the public. 

    The 100th anniversary issue features an eight-page overview of how the publication has evolved over the years, both in appearance and content. It was authored by Thomas Hunter, a member of the Illinois Bar Journal Editorial Board and a clerk in the chambers of Hon. Richard P. Goldenhersh, Appellate Court of Illinois, Fifth District.

    Tabet DiVito & Rothstein promote Fitzgerald, Haussmann to partner, hire O'Brien as associate

    John M. Fitzgerald and Brian C. Haussmann have been promoted to partner at Tabet DiVito & Rothstein LLC and Katherine M. O’Brien has joined the firm as an associate. 

    Mr. Fitzgerald began working at the firm in 2006 and Mr. Haussmann started in 2008.  Their area of practice is in commercial litigation. 

    Ms. O’Brien joined Tabet DiVito & Rothstein in November, after a Cook County Circuit Court clerkship with Stuart E. Palmer, who has since been appointed to the appellate court. Ms. O’Brien will concentrate her practice on commercial litigation.

    Illinois Supreme Court appoints Marconi to advise Discovery Committee

    Effective January 1, 2012, the State of Illinois’ Supreme Court appointed Johnson & Bell, Ltd. Shareholder Joseph R. Marconi as Advisor to the Judicial Conference Committee on Discovery Procedures. Mr. Marconi is the chair of the Business Litigation/Transactions group at the firm.

    The Committee is comprised of circuit court judges from around the state and is chaired by Justice Maureen E. Connors of the First District Appellate Court. As directed by the Supreme Court, the Committee “shall investigate and make recommendations on innovative means of expediting pretrial discovery and ending any abuses of the discovery process so as to promote early settlement discussions and encourage civility among attorneys.” The Committee reappointed Advisors Eugene Pavalon of Pavalon & Gifford (Chicago), Paul E. Root (Chicago), and David Mueller of Cassiday & Mueller (Peoria). Professor Marc D. Ginsberg of The John Marshall Law School was also reappointed as “Professor-Reporter” to the Committee.

    Borree and Hogan elected to partnerships at Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth LLC

    Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth LLC is pleased to announce that Michael Borree and Timothy Hogan have been elected to the partnership.

    Michael Borree's practice is focused on professional malpractice defense, products liability defense, and commercial litigation. Mr.
    Borree joined the firm after practicing at a Chicago litigation firm. He graduated from DePaul University College of Law, cum laude, in 2003. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999.

    Timothy L. Hogan's practice is concentrated on professional liability, products liability and commercial matters. Mr. Hogan joined the firm following a clerkship with Judge Lynn M. Egan in the Law Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County. He is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago School of Law (2002), where he was on the Dean's List, staff editor of the Loyola University Consumer
    Law Journal, and a member of the London Advocacy Program. He received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.
