    Judges contribute $25,000 to internship program - will hold fundraiser on July 19
    [caption id="attachment_12911" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Illinois Judges Foundation President Jesse Reyes presents the $25,000 check to Ronald Marmer."][/caption] The Illinois Judges Foundation has helped the American Bar Association’s Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP) observe its 10th year with a significant contribution of $25,000. Cook County Judge Jesse G. Reyes, the foundation president, made the presentation during a recent reception at Jenner & Block. It was accepted by Ronald L. Marmer, a partner in the law firm who is vice chair of the sponsoring ABA Section of Litigation. Established in February 2000, the JIOP is a key component of the section’s initiatives to expand opportunities in the legal profession. Minority and financially disadvantaged law students receive $1,500 stipends and are placed in six-week internships with federal and state judges. The internships provide practical experience in the courts, enhance professional and writing skills, offer valuable insights about the judicial system, and open doors to future careers. The Illinois Judges Foundation raises funds for the ABA internship program, its largest grantee, through special events such as “Batter Up for Justice,” a rooftop benefit and viewing of a Chicago Cubs baseball game on Monday, July 19. The second annual event will begin at 6:05 p.m. at the Sheffield Baseball Club, 3619 N. Sheffield, across from Wrigley Field.

    Judges pitch game for summer internships
    “Batter Up for Justice,” the second annual Illinois Judges Foundation benefit for a summer judicial internship program for qualified law students, will take place on Monday, July 19, in Chicago. The venue is the Sheffield Baseball Club, 3619 N. Sheffield, across from Wrigley Field where the Chicago Cubs will play the Houston Astros. Game time is 7:05 p.m., but the rooftop event will begin at 6:05 p.m. The Lawyers’ Auxiliary Committee of the Foundation is the sponsor. Proceeds will help provide full-time, minimum six-week internships and stipends to first- and second-year law students who qualify because of minority status or financial need. The Judges Foundation has secured the participation of federal and state judges who preside in courtrooms around the state. The admission fee of $150 per person includes food and an open bar throughout the game. The event is open to the public, but space is limited.     Judges Foundation to honor circuit chiefs
    The Illinois Judges Foundation will honor the chief judges of the state’s judicial circuits during its second annual Spring Reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 20, in the Renaissance Hotel, State Street and Wacker Drive, Chicago. Cook County Judge Jesse G. Reyes, president of the foundation, and Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans will participate in presentation to each circuit chief of a memento inscribed “Hail to the Chief.” The foundation also will welcome and honor the family of the late Harold W. Sullivan, a former Cook County presiding judge and founder of the Illinois Judges Association. The annual Judge Harold Sullivan Law School Scholarship is among beneficiaries of the reception. Others service projects that the foundation supports include the ABA Judicial Intern Opportunity Program, the Second Chances Program, Chicago Access to Justice, and the “7 Reasons to Leave the Party” high school education presentations. Tickets to the reception, at $125 per person, include hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Law students may attend for $75 each. A portion of the contribution is tax-deductible.     Judges Foundation to host benefit for service projects

    Judges Foundation to present law school scholarship, other awards at Joint Meeting
    The Illinois Judges Foundation will honor retired Cook County Judge Harold W. Sullivan on Friday, Dec. 11, by presenting a $5,000 scholarship in his name to The John Marshall Law School. The presentation by Judge Jesse G. Reyes, IJF president, will take place at a noon luncheon conducted by the Illinois Judges Association during its annual convention with the Illinois State Bar Association Dec. 10-12 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel. The keynote speaker is Judge Ann Claire Williams of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. Retired Appellate Justice Warren D. Wolfson, dean of the DePaul University College of Law, will receive a Lifetime Service Award. Presidential Service Awards will be presented to 19th Circuit Judge Raymond McKoski and retired Appellate Justice Mel Jiganti. The Sullivan Scholarship was established in 1999 as a means of providing financial assistance and advocating ethical values of the legal profession to new generations of Illinois law students. Sullivan, who was presiding judge of the 2nd Municipal District in Skokie for many years, is a founder of the judges association. Also at the joint luncheon, Richard L. Thies will receive The Founders Award, which recognizes a long term commitment by an individual, who is not a member of the judiciary, to creating and maintaining an independent judiciary.
