    ISBA voices support for attorney-client privilege in letters to Kirk, Durbin
    ISBA is voicing its support for legislation in Congress addressing a situation that may open the door to breaches of attorney-client privileged information. In letters to U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin and U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, ISBA president John E. Thies urged passage of S. 3394, which clarifies when privileged information is submitted to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the privilege is not waived as to any third party. Read the letters to Kirk and Durbin.

    Locallo receives Excellence in Leadership Award

    ISBA member lawyer Fred Serpe, CBS Channel 2 investigative reporter Dave Savini, and ISBA Immediate Past President John G. Locallo received the Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Excellence in Leadership Award on Oct. 18.

    The event was held as part of the 2012 Italian-American Heritage Month Celebration.

    On hand for the event were (left to right) Clerk of the Circuit Court, Dorothy Brown, Alderman Robert Fioretti, Fred Serpe, Michelle Youngerman, Dave Savini, John Locallo and Katherine Amari.

    1st hearings on law school debt held in Wheaton, Peoria

    The Illinois State Bar Association's Special Committee on Law School Debt, formed by President John E. Thies, hosted its first two meeting this week in Wheaton and Peoria (remaining schedule below). ISBA members are encouraged to attend these meetings to discuss how increasing law school debt is impacting the delivery of legal services.

    Please consider nominating them for the John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Award or the Joseph R. Bartylak Memorial Legal Services Award

    The ISBA has established the John C. McAndrews Award to honor the extraordinary commitment of individuals, bar associations, or law firm/corporate legal departments to providing free legal services to the income eligible in Illinois and the Joseph R. Bartylak Memorial Award to honor efforts to expand the availability of legal services to the income eligible in Illinois. Presentation of the awards will take place during the ISBA Annual Meeting on June 21, 2013. The Awards will be given out by the Illinois State Bar Association's Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services each year. 

    • Nominations for the Joseph R. Bartylak Award due on January 18, 2013.
    • Nominations for the John C. McAndrews Award due on March 15, 2013.

    Special Committee on Law School Debt to hold statewide hearings

    The Illinois State Bar Association's Special Committee on Law School Debt, formed by President John E. Thies, will hold five open hearings throughout the state. ISBA members are encouraged to attend these meetings to discuss how increasing law school debt is impacting the delivery of legal services.

    The Committee is particularly interested in hearing about the impact of law school debt in the following situations:

    1. Recruitment and retention of new lawyers in small- and medium-size firms
    2. Decisions by lawyers to open practices in small communities
    3. Recruitment and retention of new lawyers working for legal aid organizations
    4. Financial ability of new lawyers to open solo practices (and possible liability and ethical consequences resulting there from);
    5. Availability of lawyers being willing to perform pro bono services;
    6. Opportunity for new lawyers to advance from entry level positions in the profession.
