It's ISBA Election Season!
Spring is almost here, and that means it's election season at the ISBA. There are contested races for third vice-president and the Cook County and Area 8 board of governors seats. This election section of the Journal has background about the candidates to help you make an informed decision.
Ballots will be distributed soon. Paper ballots will be mailed and e-ballots will be emailed on March 26. Voting concludes April 30 at 4:30 p.m. CDT. All attorney members with dues paid up by March 1 of this year are eligible to vote for races in their area. Find out more at www.isba.org/elections.
Third VP. Candidates for third vice-president are chosen from Cook County and downstate (outside Cook) in alternating years. This is a Cook County year, and the contestants are Stephen M. Komie of Chicago, Anna Krolikowska of Northbrook, and John Nisivaco of Chicago. Learn more about them by reading their bios on pages 12 and 13. This year's third VP winner will serve as the ISBA's president in 2021-22.
Board and assembly. In the Cook County board race, Chicagoans Ava George Stewart, Mark L. Karno, and Arlette G. Porter are running for one open seat. In Area 8, incumbent Perry J. Browder of Alton faces Shira D. Truitt of Belleville. Find out more about board candidates on page 14. There is no contest in the Cook County assembly race, where 22 candidates are running and 22 seats are open. All successful candidates - for third VP, board, and assembly - take office in June.

Anna P. Krolikowska, North-brook. Founder and managing partner at K & R Family Legal Services. Anna represents clients in family law matters. She received her B.A. and J.D. from Loyola University Chicago and is a Gannon Women's Leadership Scholar. ISBA activities: She is serving her second term on the Board of Governors (2014-present) and served multiple terms on the Assembly (2009-2014). Past chair of the ISBA General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section Council; Standing Committee on Scope and Correlation, Marketing Committee, and Special Committee on Membership Enhancement. Anna co-chaired the ISBA YLD Holiday Party (2009-2011), raising over $35,000 for the Children's Assistance Fund for children-friendly waiting rooms in Illinois courthouses. To advance and sustain the ISBA into the future, we have to make ISBA relevant and attainable to everyone, especially the next generation of lawyers. I will focus on offering more robust mentorship, career building and networking opportunities to engage and retain younger and under-represented attorneys, offer practice management tools, and provide practice marketing and section council marketing assistance for our more established practitioners.

Kent A. Gaertner, Wheaton. Incumbent. Principle of Kent A. Gaertner P.C. Kent concentrates his practice in the area of bankruptcy law. B.A., Carthage College (1974); J.D., Nova Southeastern University Law School (1977). Professionally, Kent is extremely active in both the DuPage County Bar Association and the ISBA. ISBA activities: Board: elected in 2015 to the Illinois State Bar Association Board of Governors as the 18th Judicial Circuit Representative. In that role he has been the Board liaison to several different section councils and committees of the ISBA. Assembly: elected to the ISBA Assembly representing DuPage County. Kent served as the chair of the Bankruptcy Subcommittee of the ISBA Commercial Banking, Collections and Bankruptcy Law Section Council. He now serves on the Standing Committee on Scope and Correlation of the ISBA Board. He is a Silver Fellow in the Illinois Bar Foundation. Rory T. Weiler, St. Charles. Incumbent. Weiler & Lengle, P.C. Rory is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) who concentrates his practice in family law. He serves on the Standing Committee on Budget and Audit; is a member of the Family Law Section Council (since 2001, chair 2010-11) and is the current co-editor of the Section's monthly newsletter. He has been a member of the ISBA Legislation committee since 2012. He is a Diamond Fellow of the Illinois Bar Foundation and a current member of its Board of Directors. ISSUE STATEMENT: ISBA faces the same challenges all voluntary professional associations face to provide real value for our members' dues. Free CLE and access to Fastcase are just two ways we do so, and we need to continue to prioritize value to members. We also need to expand our efforts to promote ethnic, gender and age diversity in our association.

Shira Truitt, Belleville. Principal of The Truitt Law Firm, LLC, which is a civil practice firm with a focus on education law, estate planning, business law, family law, and public housing, with locations in St. Louis, Missouri and Belleville, Illinois. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Shira is a graduate of Southern University and A & M College earning her B.S. in Psychology, and admitted to Psi Chi, the Honors Fraternity for Psychology. She went on to simultaneously earn both her M.S.W. with a concentration in children and youth and a specialization in family therapy from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work as well as her J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. ISBA activities: Proud member since 2010, a part of the very first Diversity Fellows class. Ms. Truitt recently ended three consecutive years of service as an Assembly member representing the 20th Judicial Circuit in St. Clair County, IL. She serves on standing committees on Women and the Law and Judicial Evaluations outside Cook County. ISBA Projects: down-state team for Lawyers Feeding Illinois (2012/2013), down-state representative for Task Force on New Lawyers (2013/2014), and downstate member of the Task Force on the Impact of Law School Curriculum and Debt (2014-2016). Awards: 2016 Diversity Leadership Award recipient, the first African-American to receive this prestigious award in its eight (8) year history.
